Pharmacological characteristics of the non-striated anorectal musculature in cats.

چکیده
The isolated internal anal sphincter from cats shows a myogenic spontaneous rhythmic activity. Basal tension and frequency of contraction waves from internal anal sphincter strips are inhibited by muscarinic and beta-adrenergic receptors and excited by alpha-adrenergic receptors. Isoprenaline in high doses had an alpha-adrenoceptor-stimulating activity in strips from the internal sphincter. The inhibitory muscarinic receptors may be the final effectors in the anorectal reflex. The relaxing effect of acetylcholine on the internal sphincter was sometimes preceded by a temporary contraction due to the interaction of intermingled longitudinal muscle fibres. Rectal circular muscle strips contain excitatory muscarinic receptors and inhibitory alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. The same can be said of the strips from the longitudinal muscle layer at the anal canal and at the rectum.

Faecal incontinence in myotonic dystrophy.
Two siblings with myotonic dystrophy presented for treatment of faecal incontinence. The pathophysiology of this functional disorder is described with the results of anorectal manometry, EMG, and biopsy of smooth and striated muscle of the anorectal sphincters. Both medical and surgical management of the incontinence was unsatisfactory in the long term. Involvement of gastrointestinal musculatu...

متن کاملExtended Full-thickness Transanal Excision for Ultra-low Rectal Cancer: an Initial Clinical Exploration
Transanal local excision is an acceptable curative operation for selected small low-risk T1 low rectal cancer (Blackstock et al., 2010; You et al., 2007). Recently increasing evidence has implied that preceded by adjuvant chemoradiotherapy transanal local excision may be an alternative curative procedure for small T2 and even T3 low rectal cancer that responds well to neoadjuvant therapy (Bujko...
متن کاملElectrolyte and Water Content of the Ventricular Musculature of the Heart-lung Preparation with Special Reference to the Effects of Cardiac Glycosides
The studies of Harrison and his co-workers (1, 2) have demonstrated that heart failure in humans is associated with changes in the electrolyte composition of the cardiac musculature. The potassium content of hearts from patients dying of heart failure was found to be decreased. A similar change was found in the hearts of dogs receiving toxic doses of digitalis (3). More recent studies have demo...
متن کاملThe transitional zone of the renal artery in cats
The length and structure of the transitional zone in the tunica media in the renal artery of adult male cats were investigated. In addition, the volume of the lumen and different layers in transitional and nontransitional zones in the right and left sides were also determined. Morphometrical, histological and stereological studies were performed on 16 renal arteries of 8 adult male cats. After ...
